Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that initiating support and study of Russian, then Chinese and finally English, the authorities imply that "Ukrainian language and culture are alien to them, being the language and culture of a national minority."
According to M.Tomenko, this is the reason for different arguments in support of promotion of any language, but Ukrainian. "Planning the projects and actions for support and promotion of Ukrainian traditions and language, we have to understand that the authorities treat Ukrainians as the national minority in their own state," he stated. Understanding of this situation is supposed to validate public political intellectual actions for supporting their culture.
Thus, Mykola Azarov, Prime Minister of Ukraine, has recently called for learning English and Chinese, while Hanna Herman, Deputy Head of the President´s Administration, suggested proclaiming three official languages in Ukraine Ukrainian, Russian and English.
